Sport Management in Europe: important collaborative work now available

Sport Management in Europe explains the aspects and dynamics of sport management that are of particular relevance to the European context. This indispensable reference work was edited by Michaël Mrkonjic, Head of the Department of Sports Economics at the SFISM, in collaboration with Emmanuel Bayle from the University of Lausanne, Christoffer Klenk from the University of Bern and Dominik Schwizer from the University of Applied Sciences of the Grisons. It was published by Edward Elgar Publishing, a leading publisher, and can be viewed in the Magglingen library.

The book offers an in-depth analysis of the structures, policies and practices that shape sport in many countries, including Switzerland. It addresses key issues such as governance, financing, sustainability, innovation and societal challenges related to sport. Each chapter contains analytical models, practical examples and discussions with experts to illustrate the diversity of approaches in different countries.

An important collaborative reference work

This project is the result of an extraordinary collaboration involving nearly 60 experts and researchers from numerous international, European and national organisations such as the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), European Athletics, the Council of Europe, the Swiss Football Association (SFV) and On.  Their expertise helped to create rich multidisciplinary content that is directly applicable to local conditions. Several members of SFISM staff also contributed to the work, demonstrating the department’s strong position in the field of sports management and its contribution to international research.

Connecting theory and practice

This project has been carried out as part of the Sports Management Research Network, of which the SFISM is a member. The network promotes scientific dialogue and the development of joint projects. This collaboration opens up prospects for future joint projects and strengthens the visibility of the SFISM at European level.

The work is a valuable resource for students and lecturers alike. It offers solid theoretical foundations, concrete examples and suggestions for research and professional practice. It fits perfectly with the SFISM’s mission to train professionals who are able to master current and future challenges in sport.
