Keynotes

• Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Taube: Sport as targeted medicine for the brain

  

  Abstract: Beyond the well-established understanding that regular physical activity contributes to overall health, we are working on a more nuanced perspective that tailoring specific sports activities can serve as a targeted remedy for

  various pathologies. This paradigm shift transcends the general acknowledgment that exercise is beneficial and delves into the intricacies of how certain sports can be strategically employed to address specific health challenges. Brain health is the key to overall health, determining all our sensorimotor and cognitive actions. The present talk will concentrate on the relevance of GABAergic neurotransmission on brain health and how sport activities can be used to specifically influence GABAergic activity. Furthermore, the difficulties of disseminating this knowledge and integrating appropriate measures into the current healthcare system are discussed.

• Prof. Dr. Svenja Wolf: Progress is a two-way street. Failures, best practices, and a renewed call for more research-practice integration.

• Prof. Dr. Martin Müller: Sports for the planet? Major sport events in the sustainability transition

  

  Abstract: With their high public profile and inspirational power, major sports events have the potential to serve as a model for sustainable practices. While there is much rhetoric around greening these events, a systematic assessment of their sustainability has so far been lacking. This keynote speech will address the challenges surrounding the sustainability of the Olympic Games, comparing their sustainability outcomes since 1992. It introduces a model for evaluating

  their sustainability and explains why the overall sustainability of the Olympics has declined over time. It concludes with sketching a vision of sustainable Games that could be a much-needed driver, rather than a roadblock, of the sustainability transition.

Registration for the networking event for young scientists

The networking event is aimed at PhD students and postdocs working in sports science in Switzerland. The aim is to create a platform for exchange and networking where young researchers can make new contacts and strengthen their career development. Such networks are already well established in other countries – we would like to promote this in Switzerland to create a more sustainable sports science network.

A strong network promotes scientific and personal growth and strengthens the SGS meeting as a «home conference» where you can meet peers and gain new perspectives. In addition to networking, two input presentations will offer insights into different career paths: within and outside of academia.

The event will take place in Magglingen, on 4 February 2025, the day before the SGS conference begins; it is ideal for making full use of the conference. The networking event is free of charge (including dinner; excluding overnight accommodation).

  • 16:00–17:00 Workshop/exchange in small groups on participants’ projects (matching similar topics)

Call for Abstracts

Please find detailed instructions for submitting symposia proposals and abstracts for both oral and poster presentations below, along with information on applying for the Young Investigator Award (YIA).

Abstracts must be submitted through Conftool by 24 November 2024, 23:59 (no extension foreseen). Decision on acceptance will be communicated, at the earliest, by 15 December 2024.

All abstracts must be submitted in English. Abstracts will be published (as submitted) in the online journal: Current Issues in Sport Science (CISS) unless otherwise indicated during the upload process.

• Symposia

  Symposia consist of three presentations (max. 20 min presentation & discussion each). Please submit a brief overarching statement on the objective of the symposium and the context of each contribution (max. 200 words, no references) and three separate abstracts (max. 500 words, including references).

• Oral & Poster Presentations

  Abstracts for oral and poster presentation are submitted according to the preferred mode of presentation.

  Oral Presentations comprise a 10 min presentation and a 5 min discussion. Accepted abstracts will be grouped according to theme by the programme committee. Some abstracts may, however, need to be assigned to posters.

  Poster Presentations will take place in the Lärchenplatz building, along during the reception and will last approximately 1 hour.

• Young Investigator Award (YIA)

  Candidates who wish to apply for the Young Investigator Award (YIA) must submit a more detailed abstract of their research (max. 1'500 words, incl. references). The top five applicants will present their work orally in the YIA Finalists' Presentations session (12 min presentation & 8 min discussion). The winners of the YIA (1st to 3rd placed) will receive a cash prize.

  The applicant must

  • be first author
  • not have completed his/her doctoral degree at the time of the conference
  • not be a previous SGS YIA winner (1^st-3^rd place)
  • work for a Swiss institution or be a Swiss citizen.

  All YIA abstracts which are not selected for the final round will automatically be reviewed for oral presentations. Accepted applicants will be required to upload a shorter abstract if the author wishes the abstract to be published in CISS.

• Dissertation Prize

  For promotion of young academics in sports science, the Swiss Society of Sports Science (SGS/4S) biannually awards the SGS Dissertation Prize. In 2025, a new format will be introduced in line with the focus of the SGS/4S Annual Conference 2025 «Knowledge transfer and sustainability in sport practices». The rules for participation can be found in the template above.
