SFISM Ethics Symposium on Athlete Power and Representation

The next SFISM online ethics symposium will take place on 15 November 2023 on Athlete Power and Representation. This is about the right of athletes to have a say in their sport.

Athletes rarely have the opportunity to participate in decision-making processes in their sport. The symposium aims to change this by raising awareness of the opportunities that exist and by exploring ways in which athlete representation can be improved. Against this background, the situation in Switzerland will be analysed and discussed.

Programme

When: 15 November 2023, 2–4pm (online)

Objectives of the symposium:

  • Educate participants on how athlete representation can be strengthened.
  • Provide insight into the strategies adopted by other countries in this area.
  • Facilitate the transfer of these insights into actionable strategies for the Swiss sports system.
  • Speakers:

    • Dr Andrew Harvey, lecturer at the University of Swansea, United Kingdom (focus on unionising).
    • Chiel Warners, former athlete, currently head of the national Dutch platform against match-fixing. Mr Warners has much experience in representing athletes nationally and in the WADA.
