This introductory webinar is designed for sport researchers and practitioners who wish to explore the value of qualitative inquiry in understanding sport experiences, cultures, and practices.

The session will examine what qualitative methods and methodologies can offer, highlighting their ability to capture rich and nuanced insights into athlete, coach, and cultural phenomena. Participants will be introduced to key qualitative traditions and approaches, as well as practical considerations that shape the research process.

The webinar will provide a clear and accessible overview of choosing an appropriate methodological framework, selecting and implementing data collection techniques, and making sense of data through qualitative analysis. It will also briefly address what it means to conduct high-quality qualitative research in sport, including issues of rigour, reflexivity, and ethical practice.

The webinar will be hold by Dr Toni Williams. Dr Toni Williams is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences at Durham University and a Fellow of the Institute for Medical Humanities. Her research focuses on physical activity and disability, particularly on understanding and reducing barriers to sport and exercise participation for disabled people. She is also internationally recognised for her work on qualitative research methods in sport and exercise psychology.
