SFISM research Topic: Physical Activity and Sport

Scientific research has long established the wide-ranging health benefits of sport and exercise as a physical activity. The SFISM plays an important role in advancing knowledge of sports and physical activity.

Physical activity has an positive overall impact on both physical and mental health. In particular, the SFISM is developing expertise in the areas of diversity and inclusion in and through sport, as well as in the prevention of addiction, violence, exclusion, doping and sexual assault. It also focuses on developments in the construction and operation of sports infrastructure and draws up technical guidelines in this field. In addition, it evaluates projects, programmes and initiatives aimed at promoting sport and physical activity.

Sport in the Armed Forces

The Swiss Armed Forces draw on the scientific expertise of the SFISM in the areas of training, fitness, workload management and injury prevention.

With a view to improving operational and defence capabilities, the SFISM is investigating the fitness levels, injury rates and sporting and physical activity patterns of members of the Armed Forces, and is using these findings to develop targeted measures.
