SFISM research topic: Competitive and Elite Sport

Competitive and elite sport is a matter of public interest and acts as a driving force behind the development of sport across society as a whole. When it comes to Swiss elite sports, future success is becoming ever more dependent on increased scientific support.

Applied research aimed at promoting elite sport involves aspects of training science that focus on the development of athletes. An awareness of exercise tolerance and physiological adaptation mechanisms – particularly in youth elite sports – is vital in preventing injuries to and maintaining the health of the athletes. The aim is to develop standardised, sport-specific assessment procedures for identifying individual weaknesses in the musculoskeletal system and in mental health.

In this field, the SFISM conducts research into the following in particular:

  • Sports analyses to identify factors relevant to performance
  • Long-term performance development
  • Sustainable youth development
  • Training management
  • Preparation and conduct at competitions under normal and special conditions
  • Helping athletes to thrive: simultaneously promoting performance, mental and physical health, and well-being
  • Sports in specific climatic conditions
  • Ethical behaviour – safe sports and interpersonal violence

Mental training using neurofeedback and VR

In an interdisciplinary research project, neuroscientists and sports psychologists are investigating how and whether mental training using pupil-based neurofeedback works in a virtual reality environment. The aim is to scientifically demonstrate the effectiveness of this newly developed approach to mental training.
