Sports coach education

In 2025, the focus was on preparations for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and on continuing to develop the framework conditions and course formats. There was a positive trend in the key figures, with an overall increase of around 10% in the number of course participants, a total of 316 days of education and CPD taking place in 152 formats.

First athletics programme in SCES history

In 2025, Sports Coach Education Switzerland offered a specialisation in Athletics for the first time. This programme was aimed at coaches who work with elite athletes or teams (T4–M) and wish to build on their specialist skills.

The specialisation was offered as a class-based teaching programme for the first time ever. This format aids collaborative learning and encourages the exchange of knowledge and experience. Theoretical bases and principles were explored in greater depth, with a focus on application in hands-on coaching situations.

The Athletics programme comprised eight courses in the fields of Athletics and Sports Medicine at elite level. In addition to 21 days of face-to-face training and one online training day, the participants were required to do a transfer project as part of their own coaching process, as well as preparatory and follow-up tasks, reflection and exam preparation.

In 2025, Sports Coach Education training courses attracted a total of 2,072 participants.

CPD seminars: Exploring current topics in a practical setting

In 2025, Sports Coach Education Switzerland placed greater emphasis in its continuing professional development programme on topic-specific seminars addressing current trends and challenges in performance and elite sport. The Magglingen Coaching Conference now takes place every two years. As a result, the CPD programmes offered by Sports Coach Education Switzerland can be more flexible and even better tailored to the specific needs of coaches.

During the reporting year, Sports Coach Education Switzerland ran CPD seminars on ‘Communicating powerfully and effectively’, ‘Adolescence and performance sport’ and ‘Power to win – Speed’. It also continued to develop a clearly targeted programme, with new seminars on interacting with parents (to be held the following year) and on mindfulness and resilience.

Olympic Coach Programme Milano Cortina 2026

Sports Coach Education Switzerland’s Olympic Coach Programme (OCP) supported the coaches in the Swiss delegation in their preparations for the 2026 Winter Olympic Games and Paralympic Games in Milano Cortina. The innovative format was designed to meet the requirements of the upcoming games. The focus was on providing practical inputs for the athletes’ personal preparations and the individual disciplines.

The target group included head coaches, team coaches and assistant coaches working directly with athletes both prior to the Games and at the Olympic venue itself. Team leaders and specialists were also able to take part in selected parts of the programme, e.g. the live webcasts.

The OCP combined digital and face-to-face learning and discussion formats. Expert input was given in monthly online sessions, which also allowed for in-depth follow-ups. Face-to-face events were also held to foster cross-disciplinary interaction. Another core element of the programme was a series of seminars run in conjunction with individual sports associations to meet their specific needs. Furthermore, in October OCP participants were invited to Einsiedeln Abbey to attend a professional development seminar on the topic of mindfulness and resilience for sports coaches.

Swiss Coach Initiative: Enhancing the profile of the profession

In 2025, Sports Coach Education Switzerland, in collaboration with Swiss Coach and Swiss Olympic, supported the strategic development of the coaching profession in performance and elite sport in Switzerland. A key focus was the Swiss Coach Initiative, which aims to improve the working conditions for professional coaches.

The initiative involves four main areas of action: improving the legal and financial frameworks, recruitment, support and mentoring for coaches (including career planning), enhancing the status and recognition of the coaching profession, and improved training and professional development programmes. These improvements will help to ensure that coaches remain within the system long term, improve career prospects and give a sustained boost to the quality of support that athletes receive.
